Why a "free" AI website costs you customers

AI can generate a website in minutes. Here's the part it can't do — and why the cheapest option often turns out to be the most expensive.

You can now type a sentence into an AI tool and get a website back in minutes, for next to nothing. It's genuinely impressive. It's also the wrong thing to celebrate, for the same reason free music publishing didn't make musicians rich.

What actually got cheap

Streaming made putting music online nearly free — yet serious artists still invest in branding, photography, cover art and marketing. Why? Because the platforms commoditised distribution, not standing out. Getting heard is free; being chosen is not.

AI website builders did exactly the same thing. They made assembling pages nearly free. But they didn't make winning customers free — and that was always the hard, valuable part.

The part AI can't hand you

An AI can produce a clean-looking template. It cannot, on its own, do the things that decide whether the site earns you money:

  • Understand your customers and shape the site to convert them.
  • Write words that sell and that search engines and AI can read and trust.
  • Build the search and AI-search visibility that makes you findable in the first place.
  • Keep it fast, secure, maintained and improving as your business changes.

Skip those and you don't have a cheap website — you have an expensive silence. It's online, and no one finds it, trusts it or acts on it. The invoice was small; the cost, in customers who went to a competitor instead, is large and invisible.

The honest use of AI

We use AI heavily ourselves — it's why we can build fast and keep prices sane. The difference is that we use it as a tool inside a considered process, with real strategy, craft and judgement around it. The AI accelerates the work; it doesn't replace the thinking. That's the site that actually brings customers, and it's still worth paying for.

Common questions

Are AI-generated websites any good?

They can produce a tidy-looking template quickly. What they can't do alone is the work that wins customers — strategy, persuasive copy, search and AI visibility, and ongoing upkeep. Used as a tool inside a real process, AI is powerful; used as the whole solution, it usually disappoints.

What's the real cost of a free website?

The lost customers. A site that's cheap to make but invisible, untrustworthy or unmaintained costs you every enquiry that goes to a competitor instead — a cost that's large but doesn't show up on any invoice.

Does Bright10 use AI to build sites?

Yes — extensively, which is how we build fast and keep prices reasonable. We use it as a tool inside a considered process with real strategy and craft, not as a replacement for the thinking that makes a site work.
